In reply to Has anyone ever tried Ibogaine?, posted by arrie on June 21, 2004, at 17:01:20
I took ibogaine twice as a recreational drug about 15 years ago. It felt sort of like a combination of about 50 micrograms of LSD and about 15 shots of espresso (not the decaf kind); too jittery for me, although some of my friends liked it. I would think that the jittery effects would make opiate withdrawal feel worse, not better -- but that is just speculation on my part because I did not take ibogaine to treat opiate withdrawal.
You should be aware that ibogaine is a Schedule I controlled substance in the U.S. (I can't speak knowledgeably about its status under Mexican or Norweigan drug laws), and you should also be aware that ibogaine can be addictive.
If your heart is set on using a plant-based alternative treatment to help get you through opiate withdrawal, then instead of the iboga root you might consider the leaves of the kratom tree (Mitragyna speciosa). In Thailand where the tree grows wild, people use kratom to reduce the effects of opiate withdrawal. Unlike ibogaine, kratom is perfectly legal to import into the U.S. and is perfectly legal to possess and consume in the U.S.
However, just because an herbal remedy is legal does not mean that it is completely safe -- like ibogaine and opiates, kratom too can be addictive. Here's a link to some info about this legal herb: http://www.erowid.org/plants/kratom/kratom.shtml
If you choose to use either ibogaine or kratom, please do so with due caution. I wish you the best of health.
