Bach flower essences

How exactly do Bach flower essences relieve symptoms of mental distress? I first saw them in the health food store a few weeks ago and want to investigate them further. I will probably scan Dr. Bach's book but I'm curious if these things work. Has anyone tried them? FYI, I am interested more in the individual essences than the rescue remedy.
