St. John's Wort has GABA uptake inhibition properties, therefore increasing GABA in the synapse. St. John's has a broad spectrum inhibition that also includes glutamune, so who knows if they cancel each other out in some way. St. John's is supposed to have sedating and anti-anxiety effects, therefore maybe the GABA effect is a major player.
Valerian also has GABA uptake inhibiting, GABA releasing, and a third GABA altering function that I can't remember.
I've read that passion flower's active consituents might bind to benzodiazepine receptors on the GABA terminal.
