The thing with f) is that it assumes that people post rather than talk with pdocs, whereas people may post so as to talk better with pdocs-- to find information that will make discussions with pdocs more complete and useful.
I think it's more that people post here rather than read journal articles, or do other types of research that may not be available.
Also, given the economics of many visits to pdocs to ask questions, it may simply not be feasible to continue a dialogue if thoughts or questions arise frequently, or outside the moment of one's occasional appointments. So again, this site might supplement, rather than compete with, pdocs, etc.
But while I think the question of lurking is most interesting, I do see certain problems with interacting with lurkers-- since they are a somewhat elusive and hard to identify class.
But if we could somehow find a way to study them somewhat, I think it might be illuminating.
