Well, you are free to choose not to follow redirects that is true.
I think the idea is that people do search the boards looking to join up for different things.
Some people might be interested to discuss movies or books but not interested in social because there are too many posters here or whatever.
I think it is a nice idea to have them arranged according to topic.
Where social is more of a catch all for whatever is left

But then that is only true because people don't follow the redirect.I think that what is nice about the smaller, more specific boards is that there are fewer posters to them.
It can feel like more of a cozy group...
