The good news is that you can use perl scripts -- if you couldn't, you wouldn't be able to post here. These boards use perl, so if you can read the board you can probably deal with perl, and if you can post, you certainly can. (AOL often has issues with perl-based functions, or used to when I used to do this sort of thing more often. perl scripts ask the server to do something -- usually send or receive something -- which is done on the server, and then sent back to your browser. All your browser has to do is deal with the HTML.)
But I'll make sure I look specifically for those perl-chats...
