I think the stock response to your question might be: why do you want to know? What do you hope to hear? And why?

I think a lot of people like to keep their professional lives and their personal lives separate. Dr Bob may feel the same way.

I don’t work in healthcare; I’m a teacher (I teach adults). And sometimes my students want to know personal things about me. But quite often I don’t like to tell students about my family life, because I don’t consider it’s any of their business. I’m usually happy to answer questions about my ideological perspectives, because I can see that those might be relevant to my professional stance. But my family life is private. It might influence me, but nevertheless it is private. In fact, I would go as far as to say that some of the things that influence me most are things I will never divulge to students (and probably not to my colleagues either). I’ve said more about myself here on Babble than I ever would in class. In class, I feel more secure knowing that my personal life is private. I figure that if the students don’t like it, they don’t have to take my classes.

That’s just my perspective, and I don’t know how Dr Bob chooses to negotiate it. But I think that it’s a common way of working.
