Well - no - if it is *probably* ok, then that just leaves open the idea that it is *possibly* not.
Was it necessary to show what he wanted to show? Not in my opinion. But I don't think it did any harm either. Much like Aesop's fables the statement had a point - that everyone has these emotions.
As for whether it was towards the Jewish leaders in the Temple - the jury is still out on that one. The different gospels taken with the gnostic gospels have muddled it in my mind. Though you are correct that most people *think* it was at the leaders.
However it was such a short statement in a much larger post that I personally think that the only people that would make the connections are those that are already anti-semetic - and it's been my experience that anti-semites are likely to think of it no matter what is written.
