I thought it portrayed him as sweet and curious - there was an undertone of warning about the dangerously addictive nature of computing... but I didn't take it to be cruel at all.
I do agree, however, that it would be inappropriate to speculate about the childhood of the average poster here (unless you were sure they could appreciate your intentions) - but Dr. Bob is nearer the healthy end of the spectrum so I am sure he can handle it!
