Dear Dinah,
I don't think it is healthy for one to take personally the disappointing behavior of each and every person he goes out on a limb for, especially in a forum where mental illness is present. For instance, as well meaning as he would be, one suffering with Asbergers does not process social interaction the same way as someone who doesn't.
Just a suggestion.
