Dr. Bob-deputy administrators? Good or bad idea?

Posted by zenhussy on June 23, 2003, at 0:25:02

Dr. Bob,

I am wondering if you see this experiment of allowing posters to act as "deputy administrators"on these boards as one that is working?

The following statement from a "deputy administrator" troubles me greatly:

As to the rest of your post, as I said, I didn't read it closely because I have no intention of upsetting myself.

( since you seem to like links to anything that a poster brings up I shall provide it for you Dr. Bob so that you don't have to dig through all the posts: http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/social/20030617/msgs/236149.html )

I fully respect and admire anyone on these board who is able to keep themselves safe from being harmed by reading posts or posters that they find upsetting or triggering, however when any of these people are "deputy administrators" it begins to undermine the entire process of moderation.

How can one effectively administrate when they do not even fully read posts and yet respond to them?

I read in the archives when you stopped "deputy administrators" for some time and I guess that increases your duties on this board yet I am of the opinion that a "deputy administrator" needs to be up to the task of what you have outlined in the FAQ : Their main function in that role is to try to maintain an atmosphere of civility - - keeping an eye on what's going on....

If a "deputy administrator" is not able to handle these duties then it does not follow that they are allowed "deputy administration" privileges.

Please examine your policies once again regarding posters as "deputy administrators" When it works it works and when it doesn't whoa boy look out for the fall out! It is your board to do with as you see fit yet in allowing inconsistent moderation you are creating room for the natives to grow restless and unsure of the safety of the board as a place where people are assured of the policies of your FAQ being followed as you have written them.

Here is the text of the FAQ in case anyone reading is interested in this issue:

I can't *always* monitor these boards, so I've asked other members of this community to volunteer to help out as "deputy administrators". Their main function in that role is to try to maintain an atmosphere of civility - - keeping an eye on what's going on and, if necessary:

1.posting requests to be civil
2.blocking posters who continue not to be after one warning
3.deleting grossly inappropriate posts.

They post under their usual names (and not as me). Their actions are subject to review and may be reversed by me.
