Rule of Thumb

Posted by Shar on June 23, 2002, at 6:03:51

I've read that the phrase "rule of thumb" originated way back in olden days, when, in civilized society, a man could beat his wife with a stick no larger than the diameter of his thumb.

Now, every time I read 'as a rule of thumb...' I think of people getting hit, and would like to recommend a substitute phrase of 'as a general rule...' or 'as a rule' or 'in general' or something like that.

This is just FYI to anyone that cares.

Shar
