In reply to thoughts on 'guided' psilocybin therapy?, posted by TriedEveryMedication on March 25, 2024, at 14:55:11
It sounds like you have an enlightened pdoc. From what I've read about the underground therapists who use psychedelics, they come across as feeling so passionately about helping their patients that they're willing to risk being arrested in order to do so. In How to Change Your Mind, Michael Pollan writes about taking psychedelics under the guidance of underground therapists. In Blue Dreams, Lauren Slater writes about talking to an underground therapist. Slater decided against trying psychedelics, but she believes that psychedelics will transform psychiatry.
Psilocybin is also legal in Colorado. MDMA is likely to receive FDA approval later this year as a treatment for PTSD. It's likely that psilocybin will receive FDA approval in two or three years.
Like you, I've also done magic mushrooms. And I've tried LSD twice. I was using psychedelics recreationally, and was unaware that they'd been studied extensively as treatments for mental illness until the War on Drugs halted all research for two decades. A single dose of magic mushrooms lifted me out of a suicidal depression, and it would be years before I became severely depressed again.
