I had a hunch that intermittent nicotine administration might have effects beyond the immediate reactions. A short investigation turned up this article:
Title: "A Single Dose of Nicotine Enhances Reward Responsiveness in Nonsmokers: Implications for Development of Dependence".
Full article:
https://cdasr.mclean.harvard.edu/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/barr_bp08.pdfAs the title already reveals, a single dose of nicotine enhances reward responsivity. The study used non-drug rewards for this investigation. What's perhaps most interesting is that this increased reward responsivity lasts for at least one week.
