Some researchers believe that metformin works for mood disorders by decreasing insulin resistance. They didn't describe the mechanism in any detail. It's a great drug that is showing utility in treating a variety of conditions. The one serious side effect possible is lactic acidosis, but it's a pretty rare occurence.
