> According to the "Stoned Ape Theory" developed by Terrence McKenna and his brother Dennis McKenna, a community of proto-humans might have consumed the magic mushrooms they found in the wild. That act could have profoundly changed their brains.

It was like a software to program this neurologically modern hardware to think, to have cognition, to have language--because language is essentially synesthesia. Language is the association with apparently meaningless sound except that it's associated with the complex of meaning. --Dennis McKenna

And, psychedelics may have a role in that, as the amygdala also holds memory, not just emotions. MDMA promotes deep empathy, the feelings of 'love' and connection. Serotonin release is considered part of this process with MDMA. Psilocybin and LSD are supposed to work on serotonin receptors as well. These chemicals MAY be able to transcend the feelings of fear, anger, hatred, etc, and solidify the empathy and 'love' emotions to a much greater degree. Just imagine, a world where people feel more empathetic and compassionate than fearful and angry. That, to me, is the ultimate antidepressant. But, I imagine, there would be people of certain political persuasions who would strongly resist the idea...sadly. :(
