I kind of wonder if things have both changed and accelerated, so what was once perceived as "narcissism," at a cultural level, has become a sort of fascism, covered in layer upon layer of fantasy and denial of reality and authoritarian (but oddly emotional and therapeutic, it seems) forms of religion, and...and...
yeah. point is, when dealing with this as with many other problems with others...
without sounding cliche or anything, try to remember that the old mantra, "the personal is political," is not The Ultimate Truth, but it is worth taking into consideration, as one deals with people taken in by fascist fairytales.
