I can't speak to your "one drug being stronger than the other" comment, but the beneficial action of the MOAI is that it permanently blocks the enzyme that gobbles up your Serotonin, NE, and Dopamine. It takes a relatively long time for your body to replace these enzymes and then reduce these monoamine levels in your brain.
The marplan should start inhibiting the same enzymes in essentially the same way, I imagine well before the brain bounces back from the parnate.
The washout period shouldn't be the same as it would be if you were switching to an SSRI or something that actively releases one of these neurotransmitters. BUT TALK TO YOUR DOCTOR!
COMING OFF MAOIs altogether was rough, switching between them was, for me, relatively easy.
