this was inbetween the barbiturates and benzos, only had a 5 year period, but for a while Miltown was most popular mother's little helper during a 5 year period. Then they started noticing, at higher doses, it was very similar to barbituates. Meprobamate actually is from a carbamate, (linked an instectiside) just google meprobamate and insecticies. Sounds nasty, but some even today take and say it works them better than benzos.
It said in article reduced tension, but not full anxiolytic effects than benzodiapines. 5 Years of a blockbuster drug, then librium and valiun made history
most insurance, or it' a 4th line of choice of failed benodiapies.....and it's very expensive even generic.
