I've experienced the mood boost from sleep deprivation -- it used to be an acknowledged treatment for depression -- and when I was younger I could tolerate quite a bit of sleep loss and still cope.
Now, as I get older, and maybe as my depression changes gears, if I am sleep-deprived I get into a peculiar state where I feel incapable of decision making or leaving the house to do anything. If I push myself at that point, I risk a severe anxiety attack.
Modafinil has helped me a good deal with this in the past; if I'm sleep deprived or I've got my biological clock out of synch, I can function quite well on 100 mg modafinil, which the manufacturer calls an "alertness-enhancer". I believe it boosts NE and also some dopamine; its effects are complex pharmacologically, and still being unravelled afaik.
