Focalin (dexmethylphenidate) is kind of a filtered and purified (dextrorotatory enanantiomer) preperation of Ritalin (methylphenidate). It contains only the active isomer.
As best as I can remember, Focalin was much smoother than Ritalin. Ritalin seemed harsh to me. Focalin lasted for about 5 hours, and there wasn't much of a crash. I did not try Focalin XR. It lasts for about 12 hours.
