hi. "tardive" means late developing, like being tardy for class in elementary school.
Tardive dyskinesia=often (but not always) permanent involuntary movements, usually in the face. Sometimes involves tics.
Tardive dementia--late developing reduction in mental abilities. Often related to tardive dyskinesia.
Tardive akathisia--also often related to tardive dyskinesia, but not always. Long standing, often permanent, sense of restlessness and unease. Can drive some people to suicidal behavior.
Tardive psychosis-- this one is controversial. Its the idea that brain changes from neuroleptics/tranquilizers/antipsychotics can a)worsen psychotic conditions and b) create a psychotic condition where before the person/patient did not experience psychosis.
The "atypical" antipsychotics have a different side effect profile than the older, "conventional" drugs. The rate of tardive syndromes may or may not be much lower...there's conflicting data out there, and a lot of it was industry-sponsored.A lot of the tardive syndromes were/are more common with higher doses of the "conventional" drugs. back in the day, docs (especially in the US, for some reason) were really heavy-handed with the old drugs...and the results were often disastrous.
Hope this helps!
