RJ,
Although there is some evidence to support the idea that tianeptine acts as a serotonin reuptake enhancer, the role that serotonin modulation might play in the therapeutic efficacy of the medication has been called into question. In addition to possibly enhancing the reuptake of serotonin, McEwen et al. (2010) have noted that tianeptine has been found to oppose the effects of chronic stress on brain structure and plasticity, possibly via BDNF and/or glutamate-related mechanisms. The authors went on to conclude: "The neurobiological properties of tianeptine involve a dynamic interplay between numerous neurotransmitter systems and the critical ability 1) to restore normal neuroplasticity in circumscribed limbic brain regions and 2) to reverse stress-induced impairments in synaptic glutamate transmission, which plays crucial roles in virtually all key functions perturbed in depressed states."
I took tianeptine for a few months along with Abilify several years ago. I didn't notice any benefits other than what seemed to be a bit of a boost in energy and mood during my first few days on the medication, but then again, no other medication or other form of treatment ever seemed to keep working into the long run for me when used along with Abilify. I'm glad that tianeptine seems to be helping you in some way, though. If you don't mind me asking, for about how long have you been taking the medication?
