If I could go without a neuroleptic--no matter how "atypical"--I would. SRI drugs tend to be kind of numbing (they're sort of like emotional novocaine), so I would imagine tapering could cause problems. neuroleptics can be numbing, too, but the newer ones can be trick-sy, especially in low doses.anticonvulsant+neuroleptic combos are good for people with more severe problems. I take trileptal, lamictal, and Abilify, plus a high dose of Wellbutrin. Without the Wellbutrin, I couldn't tolerate the other meds.
I dunno. I think some docs see mood instability because now the market is flooded with newer neuroleptics. The TD risk is low-ish, so docs prescribe like its the 50s-70s...tranquilizers, sedative, stimulants, etc., all in combination. I guess I"m saying...the neuroleptic+anticonvulsant combo is good for those of us who are moody and prone to psychosis (or for those with schizophrenia, under some circumstances), but its probably not the best combo for people with less severe problems. I don't know how docs can justify the side effects and expense, honestly.
If I were you, I'd think about keeping Lamictal and maybe seeing about a stimulating antidepressant and/or stimulant.
