We should do the best we can to figure out which parts of one's mental illness is environmental and which part is chemical. Fix environmental problems by environmental means, and chemical problems by chemical means.
On the other hand, whether or not a child who has been abused and isolated from birth can have any chance at recovery without the use of drugs is up for debate. That child would need a LOT of care and support. Either way, I feel like drugs would help this child much less than someone with a legitimate imbalance.
Also, I'm pretty sure its a scientific fact that 50% of happiness is genetic. I would call being on the lower end of that spectrum a chemical imbalance.
