The link between childhood adversity and the increased risk of psychobiological mental illness has been known for quite some time. Developmental or chronic childhood PTSD almost guarantee an untoward outcome. What is interesting is that neglect can be as big a contributor to childhood adversity as is physical or emotional abuse. I think that there is also a reduction in hippocampal and white matter volume involved here, but I might be misremembering this.
Perhaps a few more scientific articles and books can make this information accessible to the general public. It might make a difference.
