Halcion (triazolam) is the most potent hypnotic benzodiazepine. It will knock out an elephant. However, it has a half life of 1 1/2 hours, and can allow for rebound awakenings. Ativan, with its longer half life, is given to prevent rebound awakenings and produce an extended period of sleep. Of course, there may be additive or synergistic hypnotic effects at first when the two drugs are dosed together.

I wonder how combining Ambien and Ativan would affect someone with severe insomnia. The principle should be the same. I haven't looked into this.
