However, I wouldn't want to take a drug that produces chronic akathisia unless there were no other choice. I don't know what percentage of cases of acute or chronic, or tardive akathisia go on to become irreversible. I have been taking Abilify for over 10 years. Right now, I have no concerns. If I were to develop akathisia - which would be tardive - I would stop it immediately. I don't know what I would use as a substitute. It is unique among available antipsychotics as it is a dopamine receptor partial agonist.
