I take it occasionally (used to be routine) but don't like it much. It does NOT necessarily put you to sleep, but it does help keep you asleep. What I hate is the in-between period when my IQ drops about 40 points and I can't even read a book. It also has a long hangover period for me (I'm 68 which may be a factor); I have to set an alarm & down a large mug of coffee to get going.
That said, I've found it useful in the past & I know many people who find it helpful, especially if not used every night.
My preference is trimipramine, which Wikipedia says gives the most natural sleep of any med. It has a long half-life, so the alarm/coffee routine may be needed!
