In reply to African Americans and psychiatry, posted by Phil on May 5, 2015, at 18:43:24
What about East Asians, South Asians, Southeast Asians, Hispanics, and those from what we in North America call the Middle East being commonly found in psychiatrist and psychologist waiting rooms? In fact, what about any non-WASP ethnic or religious group coming to visit, what, until recently, were mostly Anglo and Jewish psychologists and psychiatrists? The most obvious reason for me is that psychiatry and psychology are hardly "objective" professions, but tied culturally to western Enlightenment thinking, to lapsed Protestant Christianity and Judaism, to what happened in Europe and North America after the Reformation, and to how many Europeans and European Americans view selfhood and individuality. And certainly there is the affordability factor. I mean, god knows psychology and psychiatry are hardly tied to one's income level, right? Right?
