Mood drift is a useful term. I like it.
BPD, I have thought, is akin to anxiety disorders, and is a fight or flight response triggered by psychologic or environmental stressors as Scott postulates above. The name BPD is a misnomer for a physiologic illness interfering with cohesive personality expression.
Cyclothymia, which can also create personality disturbances due to unreliability of mood as well, is a different illness.
