Chronic anxiety and stress damages the brain in genetically vulnerable individuals (low resilience). Even if benzodiazepines were to possess no mechanism to effect neuroprotection directly as does lithium, they would work indirectly by reducing anxiety.
There are some concerns regarding the use of benzodiazepines long-term. There are a few studies that report the emergence of cognitive and memory impairments. However, as described, these impairments are usually minimal and may not even be noticed by the patient. However, these impairments may persist beyond drug-discontinuation.
