My psychiatrist is quite stubborn, he buys into the idea that Atypicals can effectively augment antidepressants, so he insists that I should take antidepressants together with Abilify. My intensive research tells me that many users have "life-changing" experience with Abilify and that the user would feel its effect very soon. I've been on it year a very, very long time, so I have a lot to say in the hope of giving advice to its users.
1 Abilify will not work for antidepressants that don't work for you. For me, none of SSRI,SNRI,TCA ever worked, so adding Abilify to any of them just wouldn't work. But if you feel the antidepressant you're on works but not enough, then congratulations, Abilify might be the choice for you.
2 Stick with low dose. The Chinese textbook says its effective dose range is 5-10mg, but in real life, 2.5-5mg is just OK. Anything more than that might give a restless feeling.
3 Be tolerant of the initial bad feelings. Initially, I just felt my heart beats ultra-fast,unable to sit still, restless, racing thoughts. But they abate over time or when dose gets lowered.
To dear users of Abilify, please share your story with this antipsychotic if you have one:)
