Alcohol is a potent CNS depressant drug that suppresses REM and slow wave sleep. Studies have shown that suppression of the deeper stages of sleep amounts to a form of sleep deprivation. And sleep deprivation can cause psychosis.
And yes, booze in itself does cause a spike in dopamine.
Alcohol makes everything worse. It is awful for all types of mood disorders, as well.
