psychedelics-shrooms and lsd-have long been investigated as treatments for anxiety and depression. There have been many positive studies for both drugs but just as many studies highlighting the sometimes devastating side effects. Psilocybin mushrooms contain Psilocin which has a high affinity for the 5-HT2A serotonin receptor in the brain, where it mimics the effects of serotonin. Deceased suicidal and otherwise depressed patients have had more 5-HT2A receptors than normal patients. These findings suggest that post-synaptic 5-HT2A overdensity is involved in the pathogenesis of depression-this means overuse of mushrooms can lead to ddepression.
