Your son sounds like me. SchizoAffective, responds well to zyprexa, hates abilify, EPS from haldol. I had a bad number of years where I was not responding well to meds, my doc wanted me off zyprexa because I complained about weight gain. So I tried geodon and abilify and lamictal, stratera, remeron(which was worse than zyprexa, not a plesant effect, I would sleep all the time and apatite was worse than zyprexa). Not to mention the nightmares i had on it, just in one night off zyprexa.
After the abilify trials I was much worse off. Durring the 6 month trial the very low dose of zyprexa I was taking stoped working all together. I stoped the abilify and went back on high dose zyprexa. It had almost no effect like it did before the abilify. I would take 50mg of zyprexa with little effect. It took many years for the effects of abilify to were off and zyprexa start working again. But i also got TD real bad in my hands from abilify. So I couldn't soider at work any more, I still had the shakes uncontrolably some times and fear I could not work in electronics any more. I took 20mg z for a while, the 10mg z did not work anymore. Then I got on perphenazine, this is the only other AP that worked for me, but only in conjuction with the z. I now take 15mg generic teva z and 12mg x2 p. This has worked well for me over the last few years.
What Im recomending for your son is to go back on z, maybe a higher dose will work. Z worked for me in the beginning, 16 years ago and still works great to this day. I wish I had never gone on the medication merigoround. But it did help me deal with issues from my past.
