I had no idea this was such an issue. The nearest psychiatric hospital I know is an hour away, and I live in a respectable metro.
I believe GPs will push whatever drugs their reps have pushed upon them because they don't know any better, but (from my experience) they will listen to a patient who knows what they're talking about when it comes to psychiatric medication. In fact, at one point, I was going to a GP and had complete control over my medication. I now go to my PDOC who I have a great relationship with and has never really disagreed with my treatment ideas.
I think there are a lot of sketchy PDOCs who will push certain drugs on their patients. Also, they may ignore better medication options due to their biased personal opinions. Additionally, they may reject prescription of scheduled ADHD and anxiolytic drugs to patients who are indicated for them. Many will not prescribe anything that is considered "off-label". I've discussed the status of the industry with some friends who of mine who work in mental health (a clinical psychologist and a psychiatric pharmacology assistant professor), and they both agree that the field needs drastic improvements.
In terms of illegality, I'm not sure how severe this issue is. I'm sure typical neuroleptics are abused and that there are unnecessary hospitalizations. I think the penalties for being caught with scheduled substances are too severe. We will never win the drug war. I feel uncomfortable having my second dose of Adderall on me and now Xanax XR, and I shouldn't have to feel that way.
I am glad that you benefitted in some way, however.
