Excellent thread!! What a great question to ask. Looking back, I am glad I chose to use meds at the onset of my depression. I firmly believe I would have suicided otherwise. The pain was unbearable and I had no clue how to understand it, let alone cope. I had a toxic family and no support.
But I am also really, really glad that I used therapy and support groups over the years. THAT work has made the most impact in my life. I am not med-free, but I have (safely) gone off most of them. Having said that, if my chemistry gets out of whack, I would not hesitate to see my doc. But overall, at this point, I'm getting older, and I want to rid my body of as many chemicals as possible.
The psych meds roller coaster is bumpy. There are awesome docs & horrible ones. There are some bad meds. Big pharma doesn't care about Joe Blow. Insurance is a PITA. So it's easy to feel overwhelmed by the process. But we are worth the struggle. We each MUST be our own advocate. It is our body, our life, our health. So, although it's a real pain we have a responsibility to ask questions, have a relationship with our pdocs, MDs, therapists and peers. Balance between trusting what you are told and at times doing your own research. Thats HARD when you're at your lowest point.
Keep asking questions. Never stop learning and reaching out like you are now. You're on the right track :-)
