Lyrica is actually very similar to Neurontin/Gabapentin: it's a a newer, "sister" med. most people can't take it alone for bipolar or epilepsy--it's generally not effective enough on its own.
Regardless, it tends to be addictive and actually feels stronger in lower doses. The withdrawals can be pretty tough, actually, and it's used a lot as a sub for benzos, but it really doesn't compare. Also, it was originally touted as a panacea for many illnesses, and the drug company (I forgot who) got in deep water for marketing it as on-label for many different diseases.
