This is a great idea, Phillipa. I agree. I think that an algorithm can be developed to use imaging to observe how an individual's brain reacts to a series of biological and behavioral challenges. The results of this examination might very well allow doctors to choose treatments with greater precision. For example, if a NE alpha-2 receptor antagonist probe causes the prefrontal cortices to "light up", one might then choose Remeron first as a treatment for depression. I would think PET scans would produce more useful information than the SPECT scans endorsed by Daniel Amen. I believe there are some facilities that can superimpose PET onto MRI.
Thanks to contemporary translational medicine, pure neuroscience research is producing information that has clinical relevance. One of my NIH doctors has made a career of this. I am proud to say that I was his first attempt at lumbar puncture. In certain circumstances, it is not so good to be number one. Ouch.
