In reply to Anyone taking Barbiturates?compare to other hynoti, posted by Paulbwell on January 19, 2006, at 16:11:57
I have taken fioricet (butalbital + caffeine + acetaminophen/paracetamol) for tension headaches a handful of times, and the feeling is subjectively different. I'm sure if you took enough you'd get to a drunken stupor, but 2 Fioricet in no way compares to 2mg of Xanax in terms of intoxication and hypnotic effect. Fioricet I can function on, if I were to take my previous prescribed dose of Xanax (2mg) I cannot function, and usually would fall asleep after taking it. Fioricet also worked on my anxiety and seemed to last about as long as Klonopin with only minimal sedation as compared to Klonopin, to the point where when I took it I would miss my Klonopin dosage because I didn't feel it was necessary. I can't speak for Seconal/secobarbital and phenobarbital (which are as far as I know the only barbiturates still relatively commonly prescribed as take-home medications, though I could be wrong), but it seems that, while these meds are definitely more dangerous in overdose than benzos (especially in combination with alcohol) they still can serve a useful purpose in known responsible patients.
As for the hypnotic effects, I experienced none on Fioricet's butalbital, and caffeine is something that just doesn't effect me, so I don't think that's why. I was able to get to sleep on them, but I was also able to stay up for 12+ hours on them.
