I've been sober thirty years and I think it is great if anybody is feeling whole with no meds. But I also think Bill Wilson would have taken a keen interest in this board. (He'd be on meds) I don't talk about it much in meetings because newcomers don't need to hear old timers talking about pills that make you feel better. That said, outside the rooms I will tell anybody that half the people in AA are on meds and the other half ought to be. I have known people who have disintegrated because they were unable to get over personal or cultural misperceptions and attitudes about anti-depresion medications. I've seen tragedies and a lot of suffering because of AA's with no personal experience extolling others to avoid meds at all coasts. They "make up their minds to be happy." I always want to swat them with a hammer then tell them to make up there minds to feel no pain. Of course once they get mauled by depression themselves they sometimes begin thinking differently. Unless they are one of that group of stoic embittered haters who want to see others grind it out like they've had to. There's a little gang of those types at any large meeting. Old sour dudes, always sitting at the same table. God bless them'. I can introduce you to a dozen. I love hearing that life is good and medications aren't necessary. But, every problem you've got is NOT fixed by the Big Book. I take meds for high blood pressure too. I'd take Vicodin if I had a tooth ache. I'm a depressive. Bill Wilson was a depressive. Most alcoholics are depressives. Depression is still misunderstood by some of the most depressed. Is admitting you're depressed harder than admitting your powerless? Get sober first. Get a doctor. Use your head. Work a program AND treat your depression.
