Serotonin exists in many different areas of the body brain, heart, gut etc. It serves different functions in different areas. However, SSRIs are not selective to serotonin receptors in the brain. They affect the reuptake of serotonin in all areas of the body. This likely mediates certain side effects associated with the drugs.
