I liked how the author of the article acknowledged the variety of possible causes for depression, including thyroid disorders and other hormonal imbalances, and I also liked how the author recommended that patients with depressive symptoms be tested for conditions that might be responsible for their symptoms. Unfortunately, none of the three mainstream psychiatrists that I've seen on an outpatient basis have ever ordered any tests on me other than the bloodwork that was ordered when I was prescribed lithium. Maybe my psychiatrists don't represent the majority of psychiatrists in the U.S., but I tend to think based on my experiences that mainstream psychiatrists don't try hard enough to figure out what might be causing the so-called "depressive" symptoms that their patients complain about.
But I was intrigued by the mention of bio-identical serotonin in the article. It's not a treatment that I've ever heard of being used, which of course doesn't mean that I think it's a bad treatment or that it doesn't have any potential. It very well might have potential, and I think that it will be interesting to see the extent to which its use might grow in the future.
