The case of Karen Bartlett was tragic, but the lawsuit did not make sense. The generic manufacturer that she sued did not design sulindac or decide on the list of side effects. Federal law determines that generic manufacturers must list the same side effects as the original brand, because the drug molecule is the same. As a result, Mutual pharma just copied the list of side effects from Merck. Mutual were therefore not in a position either to hide anything or add to the list of side effects in the product leaflet.

Ultimately, it's possible for anyone to have a severe allergic reaction to almost anything, including any drug and a large variety of foods. These things are awful when they happen. Life really isn't fair.
