Yay! Someone around here has some sense! Indeed, benzodiazepines are only addictive (physical AND psychological dependency-causing) if ABUSED - i.e. if not taken as prescribed. It seems a few bad apples, with the help of what some "experts" like Dr. Drew Pinsky say, certain medications that are in fact far LESS addictive than other psych. meds, such as SSRI/SNRI antidepressants and atypical antipsychotics, have ruined the reputation of BENZOS for the foreseeable future.
These biases feed back into discourse and are perpetuated by some doctors and institutions. It is a real shame, because compared to almost all other commonly prescribed psych meds, benzodiazepines like Xanax and Klonopin have no side-effects, and are not in any way physically harmful (neurotoxic, type-ii diabetes causing, random brain shock creating, nor do they scar the kidneys or lead to the development of tardive dyskinesia).
I applaud anyone who doesn't go with the current benzo-bashing grain. I've been accused of being an "addict" on these boards "needing to go to drug rehab!" because I have taken benzodiazepines on and off over the past 10 years (yes, on AND off!). This is so preposterous, and speaks to our society's obsession with celebrity and reverence of false Gods, er, "experts".
If Lindsay Lohan is going to "drug rehab", maybe I should, too!
o.O
Best,
