This lack of use is the result of global reductions in cerebral brain activity. In other words, a smaller hippocampus is the result of depression rather than its cause. Perhaps there are reciprocal pathological processes that evolve whereby hippocampal atrophy acts to reinforce the depressive state, which then allows for greater hippocampal atrophy.
