Ethanol is a toxin. In high enough concentrations, people have died from it through severe depression of the CNS, which can override the gag reflex and result in drowning in one's own vomit. Lower levels of intake also suppress the CNS to a lesser degree and can deplete vitamins and minerals through dehydration. Hangovers are a withdrawal symptom. The thing about marijuana is that different strains have different effects. Some have a calming, chill out effect, while others tend to amp you up some and anxiety or paranoia can result. Unfortunately, the calming varieties are not as popular these days so a lot of rife chill has been bred out. These strains still exist, but unless you're able to buy medical marihuana from a dispensary, it's hard to know what you're getting until you smoke it.
