The Australian Governments TGA (Theraputic Goods Administration, our version of the FDA) has put a proposal to the Drug Scheduling Committee to move benzos from Schedule 4 (Prescription onlt) to Schedule 8 (Controlled Drug), the same class as morphine and Oxycontin.
Australias drug scheduling is as follows
S 0 - can be sold in any shop or supermarket
S2 - can only be sold in a pharmacy
S3 - can only be sold in a pharmacy, and the sale must be made by a qualified pharmacist, not an assistant
S4 - Prescription only
S8 - controlled drugs, narcotics (exccept codeine) morphine, cocaine, amphetamines, methylphenidate
Putting benzos in the same class as morphine and amphetamines seems a bit of an over kill to me - I'm hoping that the independent Drug and Poison Scheduling Committee will have the sense to see that
