Try and think how many world changing drugs we use today that were developed in the Soviet Union or Warsaw Pact, where all research and development of drugs (as well as sales and marketing) were state controlled.
I think you'd find that the answerr is none.
Yet in the period the USSR existed, the Western, profit motivated drug industry revolutionised medicine, starting with insulin and Vitamin b12, to sulphanilamide and antibiotics, and chlorpromazine and antidepressants and steroids and beta blockers, and cholestorol meds and diuretics, the list goes on. For all the capitalist systems failings, it works.
